Italian Family Meat Loaf


This is a moist, flavorful meat love that the whole family will love. If you want extra sauce, just double the piquant topping and heat it up on the side.

Meatloaf Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 small bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 1 celery rib, finely chopped
  • 1 carrot, finely shredded
  • 3 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1 cup quick-cooking oats
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1/2 cup 2% milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup ketchup

Piquant Topping Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice or vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon prepared horseradish



  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a large baking sheet with sides by lining it with foil. Set aside. If you have a food processor, use it to prepare the vegetables.
  2. In large mixing bowl combine all the ingredients, except for topping, mixing thoroughly with your hands. (Just part of the meatloaf-experience!)
  3. Place meat mixture onto baking sheet and shape into a loaf. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven; drain excess grease. Spoon topping over meatloaf. Return to oven and bake an additional 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to set for 10 minutes before slicing.
  4. For Piquant Topping: Mix together all ingredients in small bowl and follow directions above.


Makes 10 to 12 servings.
